The homeowners contacted us to develop an outdoor living space in the rear yard with existing stucco retaining walls and a flagstone patio, requesting a pool, spa, and outdoor kitchen with a bar. Our designer modified the lower retaining wall to become a bond beam wall on the swimming pool edge. The spa was placed above the bond beam wall to enjoy a fountain spillway added to other fountains developed as water features to the pool. The outdoor kitchen was designed at the corner of the existing patio and covered with a solar-powered pergola/roof system. Natural stone was used for the kitchen base and bond beam wall to tie material to existing retaining walls and the backyard. Silver travertine makes up the pool decking and walkway to the spa. Limestone was used for the pool’s coping, raised spa surround, and caps on retaining walls to tie travertine to the existing flagstone patio, which had a current limestone band. Existing stucco walls became planters for new planting gardens. The pool’s elevation is placed six inches below the existing flagstone terrace to create the bar height seating at the outdoor kitchen. The preexisting large stucco retaining wall on the right near the pool house was removed and rebuilt to make the cabinet space needed for the pool equipment and to hide otherwise ugly pool equipment from the new space. A cedar gate provides access for accessing the equipment. A fire feature was added to the end of the pool for enjoying family and friends in the evenings.
