When they lived at the Vice President’s Mansion at the Naval Observatory, President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden asked us to design and implement a garden that would recognize the families of the vice presidents who had lived at the Mansion. Then Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden were just like most other clients. We exchanged photos of patios, fountains, arbors, and plantings and the Bidens responded with their choices.
An Azek arbor welcomes you to the garden garden entrance. Your eye is immediately drawn to the center fountain surrounded by irregular flagstone and mazus ground cover between the stones. Dr. Biden had picked out this style from photos of our previous projects. Each vice presidential family is represented by one of the large flagstones engraved with the names of all their children and grandchildren.
The backdrop includes native serviceberry trees and evergreen nellie stevens holly. Long blooming endless summer hydrangea livens up the entrance.
The garden was truly bi-partisan. At the Bidens’ direction the stone commemorating the Biden family was set right next to the stone commemorating the Republican Cheneys.
After the garden was completed we were honored at the dedication given by Vice President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden. They were extremely pleased and could not have been more welcoming and gracious.
